Palenque San Basilio is a small African-Colombian community in the northern area of the country. They have kept most of their African traditions, and their independence from the Spanish kingdom in 16th-century made them the first area worldwide free of slavery. I made in Palenque pictures of my meetings and a short documentary film on singing, and their stories behind the lyrics in 2013.
